Residential Landlord-Tenant Law

Practicing in Eugene

Matthew Johnson

Matthew is an attorney practicing law in Eugene.  He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Oregon in 1993, with degrees in sociology and political science.  In 1996 he earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, also from the U of O.   He has been admitted to the Oregon Bar, the US District Court of Oregon, and the Republic Palau Bar.

After graduating from Law School he opened an office in Eugene.  Having worked on the OSPRIG Renters Hot Line as an undergraduate student and then at Legal Aid during law school, he developed an interest and expertise in Tenant-Landlord law.  The major focus of his practice has been on representing poor people and helping them understand, protect, and exercise their rights.

From 2002 to 2005 he took a break and moved to the Republic of Palau, where he practiced law representing that government on land tenure, ownership, and homestead issues.  After returning to the US in 2005, he reopened his practice in Eugene concentrating on Tenant-Landlord law. Since reopening, he has gained considerable experience in Park and Marina issues as well.

Prior to attending college, he worked as a cabinet maker, a mill worker, a union rep. and a social justice organizer.  He spent considerable time living and traveling in Mexico as well.  (Soy un tapito.)

Matthew lives in Eugene with his family.  He serves on the Board of OSTA as well as other local non-profits.  He is an avid mushroom enthusiast, scuba diver (brrr not in Oregon), hiker, and amateur anthropologist.
