Landlords offer $26 hush money

April 28th, 2025|

Bill Bateman, hosts our podcast. Would you give up your rights for $26. Some landlords are hoping so! Unbelievable bribe offered by one property manager, to keep tenants quiet.

The hearing in Salem was monumental for tenant rights! We showed up, spoke up, and made our voices heard! Ready for what comes next? Let’s keep the momentum going! Imagine being offered $26 to give up your rights! That was the reality for some tenants.

We’re discussing this and the huge changes happening in Oregon. Tune in and get involved! A park Forest Grove, Oregon, contacted me and said hey, we just got our rent increase, but part of the rent increase and you’re going to like this. If you’re not familiar with manufactured homes, each year you get a notice that in a certain amount of time, by law good job you’re going to get a rent increase of X amount. Usually it’s going to be 10% or less.

This had a little special add-on to it. We’ll give you $26 a year if you don’t participate in things like yesterday’s event, if you don’t protest, if you don’t contact the media, if you don’t write to the newspaper, in other words, if you give up your basic constitutional rights, we’ll give you $26. Just leave that on the dresser.

So let’s look at this $26 offer…For 10 parks to do this, it’s going to cost them $219,000…That’s an awful lot of infrastructure repair. That’s a lot of maintenance. That’s a lot of improvements.

HB3054 Passed Committee and House

April 28th, 2025|

After a long radio-silence we finally have word that HB3054 has successfully made it through committee and was passed by the House. The House Committee for Housing and Homelessness gave an affirmative vote on the bill April 7th, after amendments were made and agreed upon.

We didn’t get everything we hoped for, but we did end up at nearly half the amount of annual increases we see today. The amended bill lands us at 6% annual maximum increases for park s with more than 30 units, rather than 10%. There is some confusion over the amendments, which we will clear up in this newsletter.

Great job members! You were successful in reaching out to your representatives and we did a stellar job showing up to give our testimony at the capitol. HB3054-2 will be the 3rd bill going to vote in this house session, and it was granted emergency status- meaning it will become law sooner (if it makes it through the House, Senate and Ways and Means).

Speaker of the House Julie Fahey prompted action on this bill. We are very hopeful, with her support, we will get this bill passed. The bill does include protections against landlords making demands for aesthetic improvements and also prevents landlords from requiring interior inspections of homes as a condition of sale.

Check out our “At the Capitol” post for more information on the amendments.
